Japanese Tea Garden

Today we got to visit the Japanese Tea Garden! We have been studying haikus in writing, so the girls were given the chance to walk around the garden and write haikus about anything that inspired them. We then got to have tea and cookies in the Tea House. Yum! After spending 1 hour in the Tea Garden we left to have our lunches & stretch our legs in the park. The girls were extremely excited to discover fairy doors! A big thank-you to our parent chaperones who made the trip possible.

IW Little Figures & Oobleck!

In the madness of the build up to Influential Women many exciting things have happened here at school! Here are a few posts to try to update you all on what’s been going on in 2W.

The girls began construction on their little figures for Influential Women. First they had to position wire in the way that they wanted their woman to be standing. They then wrapped them in newspaper and tape. After that, the project moved to the art room with Ms. DeYoung where they had to papier-mache their figures, and then paint them!

In science we just finished a unit on matter. To celebrate the completion of this unit Ms. Raina brought in oobleck for the girls to experiment with. Oobleck is a creation by Dr. Suess and is a non-Newtonian fluid substance that the girls had LOTS of fun playing with. (It got extremely messy!) If you are feeling brave, you can find a recipe to make your own oobleck here

Ash Wednesday & International Women’s Day

In the madness of the build up to Influential Women many exciting things have happened here at school! Here are a few posts to try to update you all on what’s been going on in 2W.

On Ash Wednesday the girls were extremely excited to have their first opportunity to receive ashes! They were given the choice and while many chose to receive their first ashes, plenty of girls chose to receive a blessing instead.

We celebrated International Women’s Day in our classroom and discussed the importance of having a day (and month) to celebrate the accomplishments of girls/women. Ms. Claire brought in special stickers for International Women’s Day and the girls each got to pick one to keep.

7th & 8th Grade Peer Leaders

Last week we were visited by Ms. Heather and a few of her 7th and 8th grade peer leaders for an SEL lesson! The peer leaders planned a lesson on the difference between boasting and being happy/proud of oneself, which consisted of a read aloud, class discussion and a game. It was really great for the girls to get to know their peer leaders and to spend some time with Ms. Heather (all of whom are available to the girls if they ever want someone to talk to).

The peer leaders read out several scenarios and the girls had to decide within their table groups if it was boasting or not

Tower Construction with Ms. Raina

Last week in science Ms. Raina gave the girls a challenge: create a free-standing, 45cm tower without using tape or staples. Ms. Raina started with a read aloud about the properties and features of towers. The girls were assigned pairs to work in, and once they had completed their tower they were subjected to the wind test! This meant that their tower had to withstand the fan being blown directly at their tower. It was much more difficult than it sounds!

Ms. Raina began with a read aloud on the features that make towers successful.

Pre-Christmas Excitement

The build-up to Christmas is so much fun, and jam-packed with activities! We had Shark Tank, Cain’s Arcade, goodbye parties and gingerbread house decorating. Here are some (awfully tardy) pictures from some of the fun we had here at school.

Cain’s Arcade

Before the break the arcade games that the girls had been working on during coed were finally complete & Cain’s Arcade was open for operation! During coed the girls were in small groups with 3-4 boys and girls and each group had to create an arcade game and build it out of cardboard. The games that were created were extremely impressive and wildly popular with all of our guests!

Informational Publishing Party

The girls have been working very hard on informational writing during this unit! We paired the girls up to write informational books on topics they felt they were an expert in. This meant they had to work together and create a book based completely on information already in their brains – no research! Things that they had to have in their books included: a glossary, index, diagrams, captions, and more. After sharing our books with each other we celebrated completing the unit by dancing the Macarena!

Happy Diwali!

To celebrate Diwali this week, two of our moms came in to teach the girls about this important cultural celebration. We got to hear some stories about Diwali and do a craft: creating diyas to hold candles and put in the windowsill during Diwali. The girls had lots of fun and we so appreciate our visitors!

Subtraction Across 0’s

Today the girls learned a new concept in math: subtraction across zeros! We have been working hard at regrouping in our subtraction unit but today’s lesson was brand new for everyone and pretty challenging at first! To bring this new concept to life Ms. Betsy had the girls physically act out the process of borrowing from the hundreds, then distributing it in the tens AND ones places. Collectively, the girls did a fantastic job – especially given that it was their first day with this concept.

Then we moved to our desks and worked with “elbow partners” to work on problems in two ways: 1) using base-10 blocks 2) writing it out on our whiteboards
